Birr Union Workhouse Conference 7th September 2013

A Conference on the historically significant Birr Workhouse was organised by Birr Historical Society in Birr Theatre and Arts Centre on 6th and 7th September 2013.

Birr Workhouse designed by George Wilkinson was opened in 1842 just 3 years before the Irish famine. Its function as an Institution was to deal with poverty by providing shelter and relief to the poor and destitute.

Since its closure in 1921 the functionality of this great historical building has been varied. From the 1930s it housed several small factories and was even used as a venue for a few Birr Vintage Week exhibitions.

This summer, Birr Photography Group under took an extensive photographic project to photograph and document the Workhouse site. Robert Revill from Birr Photography Group gave a talk at the Conference on his personal experience during the photographic project.

Thanks to Georgina Chambers for the photos from the Conference.
